Deus Vult – “God wills it.” The crowd shouted these words at the Council of Clermont in 1095 when Pope Urban II called the First Crusade, and the crusaders carried the cry all the way to Jerusalem.

The Crusader cross – The Knights Templar wore this red cross. They formed in Jerusalem around 1119 to guard pilgrims on the roads to the Holy Land, and Pope Eugene III granted them the red cross in 1147 as a sign that they stood ready to shed their blood for the faith.

The Chi Rho – On the side of the cap, the first two Greek letters of Christos, X and P, joined into one of the oldest monograms of Christ. Constantine ordered it onto his soldiers’ shields before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, and Christians went on to mark coins, churches and tombs with it across the Roman world.
